In the UK, cancers lead to over 130,000 deaths every year. Whilst established treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are often effective, for some patients the disease returns. And even when the treatment works it can be very aggressive, leaving patients with long-term pain and suffering as a consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than 40 years, scientists at the University of Southampton have been at the very forefront of cancer research.<\/strong> Our Centre for Cancer Immunology, the UK\u2019s first centre<\/strong> dedicated to cancer immunology, is offering hope for patients when there was none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are transforming cancer care by combining pioneering immune-based treatments with earlier diagnosis and smarter, more personalised care.<\/strong> Our clinical trials are already showing remarkable success in cancers such as lymphoma, melanoma, head and neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are using AI and machine learning to analyse clinical data<\/strong>, helping us better predict how patients will respond to treatments like chemotherapy and surgery and tailor treatment plans to each individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understand cancer at a deeper level using advanced imaging techniques<\/strong> \u2013 cutting-edge facilities will allow us to look at tumour cells under a range of lenses, giving us invaluable insights into how the disease develops, and can be treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advance precision medicine<\/strong> \u2013 identifying rare cancers that might benefit from targeted treatments and developing personalised treatment plans based on the genetic profiles of patients.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Allan’s Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When former royal protection officer Allan Peters was told his advanced B-cell lymphoma was terminal, he began planning his funeral. Just over a year later, he was cancer-free after receiving pioneering CAR T-cell therapy at University Hospital Southampton, a breakthrough treatment he describes as nothing short of a miracle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
